Surface treatment of a steel shaft of non-rotationally symmetrical cross-section, in which the shaft is hardened by an energy-rich beam, especially a laser or electron beam in sections, with uniform energy supply to the surface of the shaft sections, where hardening is accompanied by straightening with the aid of the same energy source, with variation of the amount and position of energy introduction into the shaft surface.
