<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for imparting a residual compressive stress by which the residual compressive stress can easily and surely be imparted even to the outer surface and the inner surface of a work having curved part of a prescribed thickness, such as a pipe. <P>SOLUTION: This method for imparting the residual compressive stress, is composed of a first process for induction-hardening a work 10 and a second process for shot-peening the work. In the first process, the residual compressive stress is imparted to the inner surface by cooling the inner surface portions 32a, 32b, 37a and 37b after heating the outer surface portions 31a, 31b, 36a and 36b in the work 10.
