PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep a part between neighboring electrodes transparent in a liquid crystal display device exhibiting high transparency in a planar state and using a memory liquid crystal. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device, a distance a (μm) between the neighboring electrodes of column electrodes 4 is determined so as to satisfy an inequality 4.0×d≤a≤15.0×d wherein a cell gap is represented by d (μm). Also a distance between the neighboring electrodes of row electrodes 3 is determined similarly. Also, after the memory liquid crystal is injected into a liquid crystal cell, the liquid crystal is subjected to transition to an isotropic state. Then, under application of 20V/μm or higher voltage, the liquid crystal interposed between the row and column electrodes is slowly cooled from the isotropic state and subsequently the voltage is quickly removed.
