PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which an original can be fixed onto a platen transparent plate by reducing air flow generated when a platen cover is opened and closed. SOLUTION: The image scanner is provided with a platen cover substrate 1 provided with an opening and closing shaft 2 and forming the outer surface of the platen cover 10, a platen cover inner face cushion 3 for properly pushing the original 5 mounted on the platen transparent plate 4, and a deformation mechanism for deforming the platen cover inner cushion 3. In the state that the deformation mechanism closes the platen cover 10, the platen cover inner face cushion 3 is maintained flat to adhere with the platen cover substrate 1. In the state that the platen cover 10 is opened, an adhesion state to the platen cover substrate 1 of the platen cover inner face cushion 3 is released. In the state that the cushion is deformed to be folded to the side of the platen transparent plate 4, and an opening and closing angle of the platen cover 10 is up to a prescribed angle, the folded part 31 is maintained so as to properly depress the original 5.
