PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of a surface-coated cemented carbide having a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent abrasion resistance under high speed heavy cutting conditions. SOLUTION: The cutting tool made of a surface-coated cemented carbide is made by vapor-depositing the hard coating layer on the surface of a hard metal base by a total average layer thickness of 1 to 15μm. The hard coating layer has a component density distribution structure where the highest content points of Ti and carbon and the highest content points of Zr and nitrogen alternately and repetitively exist at predetermined intervals along the thickness direction and the content of Ti and Zr and the content of carbon and nitrogen continuously vary between both highest content points. The highest content point of Ti and carbon satisfies a composition formula: (Ti<SB>1-(X+Y)</SB>Zr<SB>X</SB>Al<SB>Y</SB>)C<SB>1-Z</SB>N<SB>Z</SB>(where X is 0.15 to 0.30, Y is 0.01 to 0.10 and Z is 0.02 to 0.20 in ratio of atoms). The highest content point of Zr and nitrogen satisfies a composition formula: (Zr<SB>1-(A+B)</SB>Ti<SB>A</SB>Al<SB>B</SB>)C<SB>M</SB>N<SB>1-M</SB>(where A is 0.15 to 0.30, B is 0.01 to 0.10 and M is 0.02 to 0.20 in ratio of atoms).
