In a process to manufacture cardboard boxes, carton blanks are punched from a cardboard web by a punch cutter which further embosses a pre-determined array of fold lines. The punch has a series of downward-directed blades (14) embedded in a base plate (12). The lower face of the base plate further incorporates a supplementary embossing matrix (29) bearing the appropriate designs or motives. The matrix (29) is attached to the base plate (12) by an intermediate elastic layer (22).
