Continuous drying of metal, e.g. Al chips contaminated with water and oil by continuous feeding of the chips to be cleaned into an indirectly heatable rotating drying drum, feeding of the these through the drum with controlled feed of an oxygen containing gas at the other end of the drum, producing flame-free degassing of the impurities and discharge of the effluent gas obtained from the drum, cooling of the heated chips, and introduction of a post-burner. An Independent claim is included for a continuous drying unit as described above.
