The gas sensor has a metal oxide semiconductor sensor layer. At least one gas component is given a catalytic conversion where the sum of the gas components can be detected. The sensor layer is dosed or coated with a catalyst material. For the conversion of nitric oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) it is oxidized together with oxygen from the air at an active catalyst cluster (19) on the sensor surface (20). The NO2 is adsorbed, and a resistance change is detected.
