PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a butterfly valve for stably discharging/supplying lump materials without catching the lump materials such as tablets, pellets, granular bodies, and capsules in a valve clearance between a valve element and a ring packing. SOLUTION: In this butterfly valve 1, the valve element 20 of generally disk shape disposed in a valve casing 10 of generally cylindrical shape is rotated about the rotating axis C of a valve stem 21 to open and close a pipe line. The thickness of the valve element 20 is gradually reduced toward positions away from the valve stem 21, and the thickness of the maximum diameter length portion of the valve stem 21 orthogonal to the rotating axis thereof is mostly reduced.
