PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a target detector for detecting various targets such as pathogenic substances efficiently, surely, conveniently, and rapidly, and also determining their quantities. SOLUTION: This target detector comprises a light irradiation means for irradiating light, a light interference means capable of interaction with a detection target, interfering with the light irradiated from the irradiation means to radiate it as interference light, and capable of changing the wavelength of the interference light after an interaction with the detection target, and a wavelength change detection means provided along the course of the interference light for detecting a wavelength change of the interference light radiated by the interference means. A manner, etc. are preferable wherein a spectrum is measured by the detection means prior to the wavelength change of the interference light while a spectrum is measured posterior to the wavelength change of the interference light, making it possible to measure a differential spectrum between them. This base material for target detection comprises a membranous substance on a base material, capable of performing interaction with the detection target, interfering with radiated light to radiate it as interference light, and capable of changing the wavelength of the interference light after an interaction with the detection target.
