PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture display device with which more colors are displayed without lowering resolution. SOLUTION: The picture display device 10 is constituted of a picture display medium 12 and a voltage applying part 14. The picture display medium 12 is constructed by sealing in black particles 22 and white particles 24 having mutually different electrostatic polarities between a transparent display substrate 16 and a rear face substrate 18. The display substrate 16 is constructed by forming a display side electrode 28 and an insulating layer 30 on a substrate 26 and the rear face substrate 18 is constructed by forming an inside electrode 34, an outside electrode 36, a coloring part 40, and an insulating layer 42 on a substrate 32. In the case display using the color of the coloring part 40 is to be carried out, the voltage applying part 14 transfers the particles to the upper side of the outside electrode 36 by connecting the outside electrode 36 to ground and applying an alternating voltage to the inside electrode 34. The voltage applying part 14 controls the gray scale of a color of the coloring part 40 by changing the number of cycles and so on of the alternating voltage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
