PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital color copying machine capable of satisfactorily applying variable power to a document image and a vertical scanning direction expanding method that is applied to the digital color copying machine. SOLUTION: In this digital color copying machine and the vertical scanning direction expanding method applied to the digital color copying machine, a document is read at a normal speed (speed in the case of reading the document in an unmagnification manner) when a setting scale factor is not higher than 100% (step S3), and meanwhile, the document is read at a speed of one-fourth of the normal speed (speed corresponding to 400% being the maximum scale factor) when the setting scale factor is larger than 100% (step S6).
