PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescence element, along with its manufacturing method, in which brightness degrades less with an elapse of time. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescence element comprises, on a substrate, an anode and a cathode facing each other, and at least one organic compound layer sandwiched between the electrodes. Discharging is performed between counter electrodes under the reactive gas containing such compound of vinyl or acetylene structure, or under the atmospheric pressure or the pressure close to the atmospheric pressure, so that the reactive gas is made into a plasma state. The organic electroluminescence element is exposed to the reactive gas in the plasma state, so that a protective film comprising a polymer film is formed on the external surface of the organic electroluminescence element. Thus, the organic electroluminescence element of long life, in other words, that with less degradation in brightness with the elapse of time, as well as its manufacturing method is provided.
