PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the identification performance of a pattern identifying device for identifying a pattern to be identified based on an image to be identified obtained by an imaging means with a coin or the like as the target of identification. SOLUTION: This pattern identifying device is provided with an illuminating means for irradiating a target to be identified passing a passage 13 with lights and an imaging means 16 for receiving reflected or transmitted lights from the target of identification, for identifying the pattern of the target to be identified based on an image obtained by the imaging means 16. In this case, the imaging means 16 is arranged at the perpendicular upper side of the passage 13 so that the pattern can be accurately identified, and that the identification performance can be improved.
