<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inverter with low loss in a discharging resistor. <P>SOLUTION: A controller 30 generates and outputs a signal PWMB to a step-up converter 12. In response to the signal PWMB, the step-up converter 12 charges power stored in a capacitor C2 back to a direct-current power supply B. When the voltage Vm across the capacitor C2 falls to a reference value or below, the Zener diode 206 in a discharging means 20 stops the passage of current from a node N1 to a node N2, and an NPN transistor 203 is turned off. Then the voltage at a node N3 is increased, and an NPN transistor 202 is turned on.
