PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase luminance and to enhance color purity and gradation in a color projector. SOLUTION: A color wheel 4 is composed such that a blue-, red-, green- and white-light transmission areas 13b, 13r, 13g, 13w are arranged in a fan shape, that boundary areas 131, 132, 133, 134 for transmitting white light are interposed between each transmission area, and that each transmission area is bisected radially by a projecting area. With the rotation of the color wheel 4, a spot S starts to be superposed on, from inside the red-light transmission area 13r onto the green-light transmission area 13g or the boundary area 132, for example, and further moved to the green-light transmission area 13g. During the period in which this spot S extends over both red- and green-light transmission areas 13r, 13g, red and green lights are emitted from the color wheel 4. In addition, white light is emitted from the boundary area 132. This white light emitted from the boundary area 132 is a contribution to the enhancement of luminance. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
