PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an appearance inspecting machine for an electrophotographic photoreceptor drum which easily inspects appearance of a photosensitive layer, such as ruggedness and irregular coloring even when a conductive substrate has a specular surface or a cut surface and an undercoat layer is not present, or an undercoat layer nearly transparent to radiation is present, and also to provide an appearance inspecting method using the same. SOLUTION: The appearance inspecting machine for an electrophotographic photoreceptor drum comprises: a rotating roller on which an electrophotographic photoreceptor drum is mounted; a light source which illuminates white light in the axial direction of the drum which rotates in synchronism with rotation of the roller; and a CCD image sensor. A CCD sensor receives reflected light in an insaturation light intensity range in which output voltage of the CCD sensor is proportional to light intensity of reflected light from the drum to inspect appearance of a photosensitive layer. An optical filter which cuts wavelengths not greater than a specified wavelength in the wavelength range of the above reflected light is disposed between the CCD image sensor and the photosensitive layer.
