PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for distinguishing the road-surface state for enhancing accuracy for distinguishing a road surface state using an imaging means. SOLUTION: A camera 1 images a color image of a region which includes a predetermined region on the road surface. An image signal conversion part 2 converts the image from the camera 1 into a R, G, B image. A processing part 5 obtains R, G, B variance values in the image region, based on the R, G, B density values of each pixel in the image region, corresponding to the predetermined region in the color image obtained from the camera 1 via the image signal conversion part 2, obtains an index for indicating a distributed state of the spatial distribution of each pixel in the image region, when each pixel in the image region is plotted in the R, G, B three-dimensional space, in accordance with the density value of each color of the pixel. The part 5 distinguishes the presence of moisture on the road surface, based on the R, G, B variance values in the image region and the index. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
