PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep the durability of a stave in a shaft type metallurgical furnace and to restrain the heat loss of the furnace caused by the stave as much as possible and further, to reduce a facility cost needed to the stave etc. SOLUTION: It is found out that the long service life of the staves in the whole furnace, the energy saving with the restraint on heat conduction from the stave and further, reduction in cost of the facility and an operation can be achieved by disposing the optimum staves in the respective ranges according to the difference of circumferences based on the result of the point, in which there is large difference in the furnace height direction to the circumference in the inside of the furnace wall. In the furnace height direction, the cast iron-made stave is disposed in the furnace upper part and middle part range (A) having small heat load, the copper or copper alloy-made stave is disposed in the furnace lower part range (B) having large heat load at the lower part from the above range (A) and the cast iron-made stave, or the copper or copper alloy-made stave is disposed in the lowermost part range (C) at the lower part from the above range (B).
