PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently cool a waste gas discharged from a reaction vessel for manufacturing a glass preform with a simple structure. SOLUTION: An air/liquid take-in part 22 for introducing a liquid along with air is provided in an exhaust pipe 20 from the reaction vessel 10. A circulation pump 33 sucks water from a water tank 40 and forcibly sends the water through a feed pipe line 31 to supply water to the air/liquid take-in part 22. An automatic valve 32 is provided in the feed pipe line 31 to be automatically controlled. A spray nozzle 34 is attached to the tip of the feed pipe line 31 and inserted into the inside of the exhaust pipe 20 through the air/liquid take-in part 22. Liquid particles sprayed from the spray nozzle 34 are vaporized in a high temperature exhaust gas atmosphere to take an amount of heat corresponding to the latent heat of the vaporization away from the exhaust gas and, as a result, the temperature of the exhaust gas is efficiently lowered.
