The drive unit has a bearing block (2) and electric motor (1) with motor shaft (6) and housing (8) fixed on a side wall (9) thereof. A drive pulley (3) between the two side walls of the block has a track face (12) for driving one or more support cables and is fixed on a drive pulley shaft (7) mounted either side of the drive pulley and coupled gearless to the motor shaft. A brake unit fixed on the second side wall of the bearing block brakes the drive pulley when activated. The brake unit can be a spring pressure multi plate brake.
