<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a directive backlight type surface light source device capable of attaining uniform light emitting luminance. <P>SOLUTION: This surface light source device is provided with a plane-like light guide plate 1, a light source 3 arranged on an incident plane side of the light guide plate 1, an emitting surface emitting the light incidenting from the incident plane and propagating in the light guide plate 1, and a pattern surface comprising a group 11 of minute crimps formed in either the reflecting surface or the emitting surface or both the emitting surface and the reflecting surface of the light guide plate to emit the light emitted from the emitting surface directing in a specified direction from the normal direction of the emitting surface.
