<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device with which low power consumption is attained. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device consists of a liquid crystal display panel PNL and a backlight unit BLU. The backlight unit BLU is divided into a plurality of subunits of which the luminance values are independently adjusted on a surface opposite to the liquid crystal display panel PNL. At the same time, the liquid crystal display part is partitioned into blocks of pixels for surface units respectively opposite to the subunits. The liquid crystal display device is equipped with a first means SAM to calculate highest luminance from display data inputted to respective pixels inside the block of the pixels and a second means to adjust the luminance values of the opposing subunit corresponding to a high/low of the highest luminance obtained with the first means. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
