<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method that automatically determines validity/invalidity of a key input from keys in a neighboring arrangement in a keypad or keyboard. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality of keys are designated as principal keys respectively, keys neighboring each principal key are assigned as nearest neighbor keys or next nearest neighbor keys, and then each signal produced by an operation of the plurality of keys is tested. The signal is valid if it is produced by an operation of only one single key. If two or more keys including one of the principal keys are operated to produce the signal, the signal is valid if the two or more keys are correlated in an unambiguous principal key-nearest neighbor key relationship. If two or more keys including one of the principal keys are operated to produce the signal, the signal is valid if the two or more keys are correlated in an unambiguous principal key-nearest neighbor key-next nearest neighbor key relationship.
