The method involves at least detection and determination of the frequency of impermissible combustion events by determining the statistical distribution of the values of the irregular running signal and/or the frequency of impermissible combustion events using one or more dynamic and/or a multiple static time pattern within which impermissible combustion events are detected. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) an internal combustion engine for implementing the inventive method.
