<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical CRZ (chirped return to zero) transmitter using a Mach-Zehnder modulator, which has a simple structure and can be reduced in manufacturing cost. <P>SOLUTION: The transmitter is characterized by being equipped with: a logic operation means 21 which receives a NRZ (non-return to zero) data signal and a clock signal to generate an electric RZ (return-to-zero) logic operation signal; a first amplifying means 23 which amplifies the positive signal Q of the logic operation signal by the logic operation means; a second amplifying means 24 which amplifies the negative signal (inverted signal) /Q of the logic operation signal by the logic operation means; and a Mach-Zehnder modulating means 22 which converts the positive/negative signals of the logic operation signals after amplified by the first and second amplifying means into an optical signal and which imposes a chirp on the optical signal.
