PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp capable of shortening starting time and suppressing the breakage of a thin tube in long-term use. SOLUTION: A metal halide lamp 11 is provided with an arc tube 14 made of a transparent ceramic and having small diameter parts 14a, 14b with diameters smaller than that of a central part at both ends, thin tubes 17a, 17b made of a ceramic penetrating airtightly the small diameter parts 14a, 14b, electrode lead wires 19a, 19b penetrating airtightly the thin tubes 17a, 17b, a pair of electrodes 18a and 18b provided at tip ends of the electrode lead wires 19a, 19b, and face each other in the arc tube 14, and a proximity conductor 20 for starting discharge disposed outside of the arc tube 14 and with its one end side located along the periphery of the small diameter part 14b of the arc tube 14.
