The reciprocating piston (50) for internal combustion engines has a first piston section (1) and a second piston section (35) each guided on the inner wall of the cylinder, with both piston sections adjustable against spring force, whereby at least one spring is installed between the two piston sections. The first piston consists of a head section with cylindrical guide faces and a split skirt (11). The first piston also has a stop and guide ring (20) rigidly connected especially by a screw connection and forms a unit.
