<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly measure the density of the reference image and to precisely control the conditions for forming output images. <P>SOLUTION: Forming the first reference images Pa1, Pa2 on the intermediate transfer belt 22 and measuring the density of those reference images PA1, Pa2 by means of a density sensor 30, it is decided whether or not to form the reference image again, depending on the measured results. When it is required to form the reference images again, the second reference images Pa3, Pa4 are formed to be different from the former reference images. When the reference images are not formed again, the conditions for outputting the images are controlled, depending on the measured results of the first reference images Pa1, Pa2.
