POWER SAVING IN SEGMENTED DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a logically segmented processing system and a corresponding usage conscious of power including a set of physical resources and a hypervisor.

SOLUTION: The hypervisor generates sections and allocates at least some of the physical resources to the sections. The system further comprises a means for reducing power to be consumed by an optional physical resource which is not allocated to the sections. The hypervisor can allocate the physical resources to the sections for the purpose of maximizing the number of physical resources which cannot be allocated. The physical resources can include processors and the hypervisor can allocate a part of at least one processor to the sections. For this embodiment, the system can reduce power consumption by scaling supplied voltage or a clock frequency to the partially allocated processors.
