PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation apparatus capable of updating an electronic map without impairing the comfortableness of a user, and to provide a method of updating the electronic map. SOLUTION: The electronic maps 21, 41 are described with a common map data format. In the map data format, a free space for storing additional data is prepared for every unit managed at every mesh. Thereby, the electronic map 41 in the navigation apparatus 42 can easily and quickly be updated on the basis of DUC 24 which contains the leading address IA, the number N to be rewritten, relative address RA from the leading address IA and the value X to be rewritten of the object unit to be updated.
