PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soil improving method of excellent workability and economic efficiency while securing a positive drain function by completely dispensing with a sand mat, or using the sand mat of thin layer thickness without necessarily requiring sand of good quality even in the case of needing the sand mat in a vertical drain method. SOLUTION: A large number of drain members 1 installed at spaces in the ground to accelerate the consolidation of the ground are bent at or near the ground surface and directly connected to side ditches used as drainage canals 4 installed at or near the ground surface. The drain member 1 constitutes a vertical drain part 2 and a horizontal drain part 3 continuous in section, and excess pore water in the ground infiltrating from the side face of the vertical drain part 2 longitudinally infiltrates inside the drain member 1 from the vertical drain part 2 to the horizontal drain part 3 and is drained as it is to the drain canal 4.
