An inflation control system for an inflatable garment (10) such as a pair of shorts or pants, or a jacket, vest or underwear. The garment (10) has chambers (12) that are inflatable by a source of compressed gas (18) or foam in order to protect an individual against falls or other impacts. The garment (10) has sensors (14, 16) to detect acceleration, distance, relative acceleration and rotation. A logic controller (22) monitors the sensor data, and calculates velocity, distance and rotational velocity. The controller (22) discriminates a complex fall in progress from the events of every day life.
