Time reference transmission method for transmission of a time reference over a communications medium, whereby in a timer block (53), a register (63) has an initial value stored in it and is then cyclically incremented. A transmission circuit checks to see if the communications medium is free and if so the time reference value is read from the register and sent over the communications medium. There is a fixed time delay between reading of the register and transmission of the time reference. The invention also relates to a corresponding timer block.
