The locking device for a backrest of a motor vehicle's seat has a pivotable lever-type device (7) which by a pivoting movement is for the releasing of a pivotable retaining lever (18) which holds back a locking component (16) engaging with teeth formed on a plate (3) on the backrest. For carrying out the pivoting movement an upper end (11) of the lever-type device is deflected by the plate which is pivotable on the backrest. The lever-type device is mounted to pivot around a second rotational axis (8) extending in the vehicle's longitudinal axis.
