Protective gases (I) containing hydrogen are new. Independent claims are included for: (1) a method for protecting materials, products or articles against oxidation, involving either: (a) combining (I) and optionally a catalyst with the material, product or article in an enclosed space (e.g. a package or container) or (b) releasing hydrogen gas from a hydrogen donor in an enclosed space (e.g. package or container) containing the material, product or article and optionally a catalyst, and preferably initially containing an inert gas or (I); and (2) the use of hydrogen donors for obtaining (I).
