Device (1) for generating X-radiation (R) has microwave source (8), resonance chamber (2) with gas filled volume (7) and magnetic structure (5) that defines geometrical electron containing zone (6) in which electrons move at high speed. Target (10) is placed partially in electron-containing zone so that when electrons hit it, X-radiation is emitted. During use of device, target is successively worn down and measurement device is provided for determining its wear. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (a) an X-radiation generating device with an electron target whose position can be varied to vary the X-ray emission point; (b) a method for generating X-radiation and; (c) a method for generating a 3D image of an examination object.
