PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To alleviate voltage stress in a normal operation and transition on a switch element constituting a preheating control circuit to suppress a filament preheating current in lighting, in a discharge lamp lighting device to light a discharge lamp with a high frequency. SOLUTION: In the discharge lamp lighting device which has the preheating control circuit constituted by including at least a series circuit of a primary winding wire of a converter element T1 for preheating and a switch element Q3 for preheating, and in which the switch element Q3 is controlled to be off in a normal operating state of an inverter, a clamping circuit constituted of at least a diode D1 is connected to a prescribed direct current power supply E1 from a high voltage side of the switch element Q3, an anode side of the diode D1 constituting the clamping circuit is connected to the high voltage side of the switch element Q3, and a cathode side is connected to the prescribed direct current power supply E1.
