PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas compressor capable of efficiently compressing refrigerating gas directly after starting the compressor, securing a vane back pressure which is suitable in regular running. SOLUTION: A rear back pressure space 28 communicates an oil reservoir 27 with a bottom of a vane groove 15 via an back pressure oil supply passage 29. Midway along the back pressure supply passage 29, there is provided with a back pressure opening and closing valve 30 which opens when the pressure difference is not greater than a predetermined value, and is closed when it exceeds the predetermined value, and there is provided with a thread groove pump 40 for flowing the oil in the back pressure oil supply passage in the compressor rotation. This makes, at starting the compressor, the thread groove pump 40 feed the oil in the reservoir 27 into the bottom of the vane groove 15 via the back pressure oil supply passage 29 and ejects the vane 16 out of the vane groove 15. On ejecting the vane 16, the compressor starts to compress the refrigerant gas, the back pressure opening and closing valve 30 closes when the pressure difference between the oil reservoir 27 and the rear back pressure space 28 exceeds the predetermined value to run steady operation under a suitable vane back pressure.
