To gas ionize an analyte in a moving ion spectrometer, discharges are used from at least two pulsed vacuum ultra violet (VUV) and/or UV light sources (3) in different wavelengths, in a cylindrical ionizing zone (1). Or a number of dielectric and electrically disabled discharges are used with different filling gas mixtures. The apparatus also has a drift zone (2) with spaced drift rings and a drift gas inlet.
