<p>A mining or tunnelling machine includes a shield (12) which supports a boom (13) having at the forward end a cutting head (14). There is a drive arrangement (16) and a control mechanism (17, fig 2) which allows the cutting head (14) to operate at a rock cutting speed and a drill positioning speed. When it is required to drill the rock, the drill (22) is moved from a position remote from the cutting head (14) on a track (21). Once adjacent the cutting head (14) the drill (22) is attached to the cutting head (14) by attachment members (23, 24) and the cutting head (14) is operated at a speed to allow positioning of the drill (22, fig 4).</p> |
