PURPOSE: A method for coloring lyrics in a karaoke system is provided to convert colors of lyrics reproduced with MIDI data into different colors according to a pitch and a tempo of a user sound inputted through a microphone, so that a user can identify whether a pitch and a tempo of a song are normal. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer reads/reproduces MIDI data and lyric data of an optional audio song recorded in a storage(S10). A pitch detection block compares a pitch of a user sound with a reference pitch(S11). If the pitch and a tempo of the user sound are relative to a pitch and a tempo of a currently reproduced song accompaniment(S12), a color of a currently reproduced song caption is processed in blue color(S13). If the pitch only of the user sound is relative to the pitch of the song accompaniment(S14), the color of the song caption is processed in green color(S15). If the tempo only of the user sound is relative to the temp of the song accompaniment(S16), the color of the song caption is processed in yellow color(S17). If both pitch and tempo are not relative to the pitch and the tempo of the song accompaniment(S18), the color of the song caption is processed in red color(S19).
