PURPOSE: A microwave oven and a method are provided to reduce manufacturing costs by eliminating the need of using an additional amplifier, and accurately calculate a cooking time. CONSTITUTION: A microwave oven comprises a relative humidity sensor(10) for removing moisture in accordance with a heater driving signal and sensing the change of humidity in accordance with a sensor control signal; and a micro computer(20) for outputting the heater driving signal and the sensor control signal to the relative humidity sensor in accordance with a cooking start command of a user, setting, as an initial value, the humidity level sensed through the relative humidity sensor at the point of time where the moisture is removed by the relative humidity sensor, setting a voltage displacement, calculating a cooking time on the basis of the time when the difference between the humidity level sensed through the relative humidity sensor and the preset initial value has reached the preset voltage displacement, and controlling a magnetron in accordance with the calculated cooking time.
