PURPOSE: A device for automatically storing a telephone number of a portable terminal and a method therefor are provided to extract digits of a telephone number informed by other party in a number extraction standby mode by inputting a specific key, and to store the digits in a buffer to display the digits on a display, thereby automatically storing the telephone number in a busy state. CONSTITUTION: If a user inputs a specific key(100), a controller senses the key and converts a portable terminal into a number extraction standby mode(101). If other party speaks out a telephone number, the controller extracts digits of the telephone number one syllable by one syllable through a voice processor, and stores the extracted digits in a buffer(102). The controller displays the stored telephone number on a display(104). If the user presses an OK key, the controller senses the OK key(105), and stores the telephone number in a recent originated number list(106). If the user ends a call(108) and inputs a menu key in a call waiting state(109), the controller senses the menu key, and displays a menu(110).
