PURPOSE: A method for searching a recording position by using a thumbnail picture is provided to selectively read I-pictures or the most adjacent I-pictures to convert into thumbnail pictures, and to output the thumbnail pictures through an OSD screen or to sequentially output the thumbnail pictures, so that a user can quickly search a desired recording position. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer controls a VDP system, scans I-pictures recorded on a DVD at user scan intervals, and selectively reproduces the I-pictures. A thumbnail picture generator(14) converts the selectively reproduced I-pictures into thumbnail pictures. An OSD generator simultaneously outputs the first to fourth thumbnail pictures on an OSD screen in a thumbnail picture search mode, and outputs the fifth to eighth thumbnail pictures. If a user designates the sixth thumbnail picture, the microcomputer searches a recording position of an I-picture corresponding to the sixth thumbnail picture, and performs a normal play operation from the searched recording position.
