A wedge-shaped section is removed from the drainpipe, leaving a hole in the latter, and a screen is secured to the lower edge of the hole. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Leaf separator for mounting inside a drainpipe, comprising a screen with a profile having a U-shaped cross-section extending around at least part of its periphery and used to secure it to the lower edge of a wedge-shaped hole in a drainpipe; and (2) Kit comprising a template used to form a wedge-shaped hole in a drainpipe, and an at least substantially elliptical screen for securing to the lower edge of the hole.
