726,469. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 18, 1953 [May 27, 1952], No. 13889/53. Class 35. Cooling gas or liquid is passed through passages in the current collector and through the rotor, while fluid is also passed over the brush gear and stator core. Both fluid streams, which may be in series, parallel, or quite independent are kept away from the current collector surface and the airgap, which parts may be occupied by gas under pressure or air conditioned with water vapour. As shown, one stream of fluid enters at 37, passes through the sleeve carrying the commutator spider and the armature core. One end cover 27 has an axially extending flange through which the brushes pass and which keeps the fluid entering at 41 from the commutator surface, this fluid then traversing the space between the field core 22 and the casing 45 and leaving at exit 46. The machine is particularly intended for use as a generator on aircraft.
