PORTABLE COMPUTER AND POWER CONTROLLING METHOD THEREOF

PURPOSE: A portable computer and a power controlling method thereof are provided to reduce the unnecessary power consumption by cutting off the power supply of a video chip when a user does not use an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) screen of the portable computer. CONSTITUTION: An opening/closing detector(19) generates a detection signal by detecting the opening/closing of a main body and an LCD part(17). A controller(25) controls an LCD power supply(21) and a video chip power supply(23) in order to cut off the power supply for the LCD part and the video chip(22) if the main body and the LCD part are judged as a closed state based on the detection signal from the opening/closing detector. A video memory(24) temporarily stores a video signal to be transmitted to the LCD part. The controller stores the video information to the video memory before cutting off the power supply of the video chip.
