The beam (1) has an adjustable thickness in at least one end region (19, 20) where it is supported on e.g. a wall. A cavity (2) is located next to a rib (3) in this region and the length of the cavity along this rib is less than the total length of the rib. Cavity depth is at least 5 cm and cavity height is approximately equal to the height difference between the opposing support regions.
