PURPOSE: Provided is Machilus thunbergii extract which induces cell apoptosis. In particular, lignan and lactone compounds are isolated from the Machilus thunbergii extract and used for therapeutics for incurable and chronic diseases and food additives. CONSTITUTION: A therapeutic for inflammation or a food additive is characterized by containing Machilus thunbergii extract, wherein the active ingredient of the Machilus thunbergii extract is selected from compounds represented by the formulae(1, 2,3) or their derivatives.
